Unrest in Haryana Continues: 80 Detained, 44 FIRs Filed; Tragic Mob Assault Claims Another Life in Gurgaon

News

Amidst escalating communal tensions in Gurgaon, the situation took a grim turn after a series of violent incidents. The clashes initially erupted in Nuh on Monday afternoon, when a religious procession en route to a temple was viciously attacked. However, matters worsened as the clock struck midnight in Gurgaon, witnessing the horrifying assault on a mosque by an armed mob. Tragically, a 23-year-old man, who was sleeping inside the mosque, fell victim to the mob's brutal attack, succumbing to knife wounds, while another individual was left severely injured.

In response to the escalating violence and to contain further flare-ups, security forces were deployed in substantial numbers in the neighboring Nuh, and authorities in Gurgaon focused on Sohna, where mobs had earlier gone on a rampage, targeting shops and houses. To maintain control and curb any potential escalation, a 48-hour curfew was promptly imposed in Nuh at midnight on Monday, accompanied by the suspension of internet and SMS services.

Despite these measures, reports of attacks on shops and incidents of arson emerged from various parts of Gurgaon throughout Tuesday, leaving the Millennium City on edge and the police on high alert. While the Tuesday incidents of vandalism did not result in any reported deaths or injuries, the atmosphere remained tense and unpredictable, necessitating constant vigilance and swift action from the authorities to restore peace and safeguard the well-being of the residents.

The situation remains fluid and challenging, prompting the authorities to redouble their efforts in ensuring public safety and swiftly resolving the underlying issues that have fueled this wave of violence. The community anxiously awaits measures to address the root causes and foster understanding and harmony, in hopes of preventing further tragedies and fostering a peaceful coexistence.

In response to the escalating communal clashes in Gurgaon, the administration took stringent measures to maintain law and order. Internet services were suspended in the areas of Sohna, Manesar, and Pataudi until further notice, aiming to curb the dissemination of misinformation and prevent any further incitement of violence through online platforms. Additionally, as a precautionary step, all schools were directed to remain closed for physical classes until August 2, prioritizing the safety and well-being of students amid the tense situation.

The ripple effects of the unrest were felt in the corporate world, with many office-goers opting to work from home following advisories from their workplaces to avoid traveling amidst the volatile atmosphere.

The Haryana government responded to the situation by initiating investigations, registering 44 FIRs as of Tuesday evening, with a focus on uncovering the factors contributing to the communal clashes. Across various districts, police acted swiftly, arresting 80 individuals in connection with the incidents.

Notably, the majority of the FIRs, numbering at least 22, were filed in Nuh, reflecting the epicenter of the recent violent clashes. This indicates the authorities' determination to address the root causes and hold accountable those responsible for instigating or participating in the unrest.

While the government initially reported five deaths resulting from the rioting, latest reports clarified that four individuals had tragically lost their lives. Among the deceased were two homeguards, a member of the Gurgaon mosque, and a Panipat resident, who may have been involved in the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP)-organised Brij Mandal Jalabhishek Yatra attacked in Nuh. This unsettling revelation adds to the gravity of the situation and underscores the urgent need for peaceful resolution and reconciliation.

In light of the ongoing investigations and the complex nature of the events, the authorities remain dedicated to restoring calm, fostering communal harmony, and preventing any further loss of life or damage to property. The community at large awaits measures that promote dialogue, understanding, and cooperation to heal the wounds caused by the clashes and build a resilient foundation for a peaceful coexistence in the region.
